About the event
Session Description
Counseling minors presents unique ethical challenges because the therapeutic relationship rarely involves only the counselor and client. Parents and guardians may provide consent, request information, participate in treatment, communicate concerns, or hold expectations that differ from those of the child or adolescent.
Counselors must balance the developing autonomy and privacy of the minor client with parental involvement, informed consent and assent, clinical judgment, documentation responsibilities, and applicable professional and legal requirements.
This Practice Well ethics Deep Dive examines common ethical considerations that arise when counseling children and adolescents. Participants will explore practical approaches to establishing expectations with families, managing confidentiality and parent communication, navigating competing interests, maintaining appropriate boundaries, and documenting ethically complex situations.
The session emphasizes thoughtful ethical decision-making rather than one-size-fits-all answers and encourages clinicians to recognize when consultation, additional safeguards, or review of applicable law and professional standards may be necessary.
